Thomas Kasten, MD
Family Medicine, Primary Care
I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Oregon. I earned my medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco and was co-chief resident at the Contra Costa Family Practice Residency Program in Martinez, California.
An interest in life sciences, nurtured by exploring the swamps and woods of my childhood environs outside Corvallis, led me to a stint of biological research before finding my calling in medicine. My desire to help others while putting science to use led me to medical school in San Francisco. I was fortunate to train with many compassionate, skilled providers in a challenging residency program at Contra Costa County Regional Medical Center. This prepared me well to practice full spectrum family practice including hospital and outpatient pediatrics, obstetrics and adult medicine which I did for the first years of my career after relocating my family to Oregon here in Portland in 2003. I joined Portland Family Practice, where I practiced until joining The Portland Clinic in 2012.
I currently practice outpatient family medicine and enjoy caring for humans of every age. I enjoy having a diverse patient panel and opportunities to address the wide range of issues that only family medicine provides. I partner with patients to improve or maintain their health in ways that meet their goals. It is a process that requires listening and knowing my patients. As a family practice doctor I feel very privileged to be an advisor in so many important milestones of life, from ensuring proper growth in the first weeks of life, to managing life changing illnesses. Disease prevention is where I hope to make the most impact on patient’s lives with often simple, patient-centered interventions. However, I enjoy treating acute and chronic diseases and perform simple office based procedures to keep my patients enjoying life to the fullest. All of this is done with the help of a dedicated, skilled and compassionate staff at The Portland Clinic.
Spending time with those I love is how I thrive. I feel very lucky to live in this beautiful part of the world and enjoy making sure my kids get to see it up close on hikes and on camping and backpacking trips. I love grazing in and preparing fruits and vegetables from my wife’s or my father’s gardens and sharing tasty, healthy food with others. Running with my golden retriever keeps me sane, mobile and healthy.
