I’m a Portland native, born at Oregon Health & Science University and raised on the west side. I spent much of my childhood on a 10-acre farm, exploring the surrounding fields and forests with my siblings and our dog. Many cuts, scrapes, and bruises ensued, and as the oldest of the bunch, I felt it was my responsibility to take care of these minor injuries. This brotherly instinct grew into a calling to provide care and healing to folks beyond my family.
After graduating from Portland State University, I left Portland to attend medical school at Loma Linda University in Southern California. During a neurosurgery rotation in medical school, I became fascinated by the unparalleled intricacy of the brain, spinal cord and other neurologic structures. I was also impressed by the elegance of the neurologic examination which, when conducted by an experienced practitioner, could effectively pinpoint where the problem was. I decided to pursue a neurosurgical residency, but after three years, I changed course, leaving the operating room to become a neurologist.
I completed my neurology residency at the University of Washington. As a resident, one of the things I had liked most was spending face-to-face time with patients. Time and time again, I find that our patients are “telling us the diagnosis” — this face-to-face time is crucial to allow them to tell their stories. In addition to establishing long-term relationships with my patients, I enjoy the detective work and critical thinking required to make a neurologic diagnosis. I’m particularly interested in disorders of the spinal cord, peripheral nervous system and muscles. I completed a one-year neuromuscular fellowship at OHSU to learn more about these diseases and to hone my skills in performing nerve-conduction studies with electromyography (EMGs).
As much as I love my work as a neurologist, the best part of my day is coming home to my wife and son. Without a doubt, the two most critical sources of support and strength in my life are my faith and my wonderful wife. As a family, we love to go on hikes in the Pacific Northwest. Going out for sushi and a movie is a favorite night out for my wife and me. I love playing soccer and am always looking to join a good pick-up game.
