Patient Referral Information for Behavioral Health

Behavioral health services at The Portland Clinic are available to patients who have established care with a primary care provider (PCP) at the clinic.

How do I get a referral?

Your primary care provider at The Portland Clinic will submit a referral to our behavioral health team, even if your insurance plan does not require one. This allows your medical and behavioral health providers to coordinate your care and helps us determine which services are most appropriate for your needs.

If you are not currently a patient of The Portland Clinic, you will need to establish care with one of our primary care providers before you can be referred to our Behavioral Health Department.

What happens after I am referred?

After we receive your referral, our Behavioral Health Intake Coordinator will contact you to review the referral and discuss next steps. This may include talking with you about your current concerns, the type of care you are seeking, appointment availability, and insurance considerations.

Our behavioral health team provides short-term, focused psychotherapy and consultation, averaging approximately 10–12 visits. Your individual treatment plan and number of visits may vary depending on your needs and treatment goals.

Not every referral will be best served within our short-term treatment model. If your needs would be better addressed through longer-term psychotherapy, psychiatric care, psychological or neuropsychological testing, substance use treatment, or other specialized mental health services, our team can help direct you toward appropriate community resources.

Appointment availability

Demand for behavioral health services is high, both locally and nationally, so there may be a wait before an appointment is available. Our Behavioral Health Intake Coordinator can discuss current availability and next steps with you. When appropriate, we may also provide information about community behavioral health resources.

Finding a behavioral health provider in the community

You may also contact your health insurance plan for a list of behavioral health providers covered by your plan. Online directories that may help you locate a community provider include:

If you are experiencing a mental health crisis or need immediate assistance, please seek urgent help rather than waiting for a behavioral health appointment.
