Bio

I have always been interested in the diverse aspects of the full spectrum of medical care, from preventive medicine to complex diagnoses such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and kidney disease. That’s part of the reason why I decided to pursue both internal medicine and nephrology. But the larger reason is that I enjoy the relationships with my patients. It takes time and mutual respect to come up with a treatment plan together, and it’s through this collaborative effort that we achieve the best health outcomes. I believe in companionate, evidence-based medicine, and I value the privilege to improve the quality of each of my patients’ lives.

I’m from Kentucky, and I completed my undergraduate degree, medical degree, internal medicine residency and nephrology fellowship at the University of Kentucky. I moved to Oregon in 2003 and chose to practice at The Portland Clinic because of its multidisciplinary structure, which gives me access to quality resources to further support my patients’ medical needs. I am board certified in both internal medicine and nephrology.

When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my wife, Cheri, and son, Griffin. We enjoy sports, music, traveling and being in nature.

Dr. Bates has been named a Top Doctor by Portland Monthly magazine multiple times.
