I attended the University of New Mexico for medical school, followed by five years of residency training in orthopedic surgery at the University of Vermont and one year of specialized training in sports medicine at the University of Utah. I grew up in a small town in New Mexico and later moved around the country before ending up in Portland where you can find any outdoor activity within a few hours’ drive. I have always had an interest in active people and sports/fitness activities and am the team doctor for a local high school and a local college.

My practice is in orthopedic sports medicine. My goal is to get people back to the point where they’re able to participate, not just in daily living activities, but in their athletics and fitness activities as well. The biggest thing that most of us could do to enhance our health and to live longer is regular physical exercise. Exercise is the best medicine! I am interested in all types of sports and fitness related injuries, both surgical and non-surgical. The majority of the people I see do not need surgery. My most common treatment is to change a patient’s exercise program in order to address areas that are tight or muscles that are weak and not able to support their activity. About 90% of my surgical practice is related to the knee, the most injured joint in sports. I specialize in knee ligament and meniscus problems, especially anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

I have a very busy life with three children who are involved in all kinds of activities. I enjoy fly fishing, wood and metal working, and outdoor activities. The key to thriving is being interested in the world around, and always learning something new.
