Sports Concussion Program

Overview

Concussions are serious injuries that often go unrecognized and undertreated. Returning to a sport too early after a concussion can result in serious long-term problems. The Portland Clinic’s sports medicine specialists are highly trained in identifying and treating concussions, and were among the first providers in Portland to offer ImPACTTM testing for concussion management.

SERVICES

  • Comprehensive concussion evaluation
  • Baseline and post-injury neurocognitive ImPACT testing
  • Recovery monitoring for a safe return-to-play
  • Individualized return-to-play guidelines

ImPACT TESTING

ImPACTTM is a computerized test that helps determine how severe a head injury is and when it has fully healed. It is the most widely accepted concussion-management tool in the U.S., currently used in the NFL, NBA, MLB, MLS and NHL, as well as in collegiate sport programs and school districts across the nation.

ImPACT testing also can be used to record healthy brain function as a baseline in case of future injury. Athletes must be at least 11 years old to participate, and should be tested prior to their sport season. A baseline test costs $30 and is good for two years. A physician visit is not required for baseline testing.
