Bio

As a neurologist who has worked in both academic and private practice, I try to bring a thoughtful, evidence-based approach to my work. Neurological problems are often complex and particularly impactful. Successful medical care requires collaboration between patient and physician, as well as the recognition that each patient is a unique individual, and that ill health must be viewed in the context of the whole person.

I see patients with all types of neurological concerns, with a focus on stroke, migraines and conditions affecting the peripheral nerves. I perform electromyography (EMG) and nerve-conduction testing and also do Botox injections.

I was born in Cape Town, South Africa, where I earned an MBChB* (MD equivalent) at the University of Cape Town Medical School and trained as a neurologist before moving to the United States. Here,I continued my education with a neurology residency at Yale University School of Medicine and a spine/neuromuscular neurology fellowship at the University of California San Francisco. I served on the neurology faculty at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle before settling in Portland, where I have lived and practiced since 2010. I am board certified in neurology and electrodiagnostic medicine.

When I’m not in the office, I like to spend time with family, go mountain climbing, and enjoy woodworking with hand tools.

*MBChB (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) is the primary medical degree in South Africa, the U.K., and several other countries. In most countries, MBChB and MD degrees are considered equivalent for practicing medicine.
