Occupational Therapy

Overview

The Portland Clinic’s occupational therapy department is here to help you regain and build skills that are important for independent functioning and living due to an orthopedic, neurological, or cognitive disorder. Our goal is to help you achieve maximum independence and to enhance your quality of life to the fullest. Occupational therapy provides intervention to help regain function, maintain function or make accommodations for deficits you may be experiencing.

PROCDEDURES/SERVICES (Including but not limited to)

  • Custom design orthotic fabrication to help prevent stiffness or for protective immobilization
  • Aid in patient recovery from hand and upper extremity surgery
  • Aid patients who suffer from conditions affecting the hands and upper extremity such as:
    • Fractures
    • Injured tendons
    • Tendonitis/tenosynovitis (Tennis elbow, de Quervain’s)
    • Dupuytren’s contracture
    • Ligament injury (TFCC injury)
    • Trigger finger
    • Peripheral nerve entrapments (CTS, Cubital tunnel syndrome and radial nerve syndrome)
    • Arthritis
    • Amputation (thumb and digits)
  • Educate on adaptive equipment for everyday activities of the hands
  • Help reduce sensitivity from nerve compression
  • Assist with work ergonomic modifications

Additionally, occupational therapy can assist with deficits in function from neurological issues (CVA, Parkinson’s, etc.) and concussion. Occupational therapy can address residual functional issues following concussion, such as:

  • Visual changes
  • Headache
  • Changes in memory or speed of processing
